The Heritage Story
By first turning back a few decades, one gets a glimpse into what fueled the passion and the perseverance that it took to create the community known as Heritage Wake Forest.  Developer, Andy Ammons, recounts his favorite childhood memories with one common denominator – the outdoors. Camping, fishing, hunting, the Ammons clan was always reveling in nature.  So, it comes as little surprise that Andy’s most ambitious lifetime pursuit would be grounded in a project marked by good stewardship of the land and the creation of opportunities to make the natural setting a focal point of enjoyment for all who would make Heritage their home.

Scroll forward, through the Ammons family’s own “heritage.” Grounded in experience and inspired by vision, communities spanning Raleigh and North Carolina’s east coast, had come to bear the Ammons name, and set the bar for excellence in community development. By the mid-1980s, Andy’s father, Jud Ammons, purchased a picturesque tract of Wake Forest farmland, a bold step that would blossom into the vibrant community known as Heritage – where homeowners, businesses, conveniences, and amenities would form a “habitat” of sorts, where each facet of life would enhance the others.

Just close enough to the capital city of Raleigh and the opportunity-rich Triangle, yet just distant enough to ensure families a generous amount of the green space, fresh air, and blue sky that is synonymous with good southern living, this project was destined to succeed, and succeed it did. Twice in its first ten years, Heritage was voted North Carolina’s Master Planned Community of the Year.

Nothing in this endeavor was without attention to detail and purpose. Before even a single home was built, Jud and Andy began planting trees to beautify the vistas and provide one million – yes, one million – cherished spots of shade under the North Carolina sun. Similarly, it was a deliberate and forward-looking process that resulted in the magnificent golf course that is the centerpiece of the community. And as neighborhoods began taking shape along its boundaries, so, too, did plans for a soccer field, schools, a swimming pool. As the community thrived, so, too, did the aspirations for still-more attractive features that residents could enjoy… a second swimming pool complex, miles of greenway walking trails, parks, playgrounds, and a fishing pond.

Today, Heritage is widely recognized as a community with enduring value and superb quality of life, and holds the distinction of being a place that has stayed true to the promise that opportunities to revel in nature would abound, just as they did for a certain young boy named Andy who would grow up to honor his love of the outdoors!
